Khotyn Castle is one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine and a popular Ukrainian movie star; filmmakers love to use this fortification complex as a location for their movies as we can see in popular Eastern European films such as “The Three Musketeers”, “The Arrows of Robin Hood”, and “Ivanhoe”.

The fortress is located on the right bank of the Dniester River in Chernivtsi Oblast and occupies a rectangular area of 1,219 by 244 meters, its walls are up to 40 meters high and about 6 meters thick

The castle was originally built in the 12th century out of wood, in the 15th century was completely rebuilt of stone.

The area near the castle was the site of the famous Khotyn war of 1621 when the united troops of Poland and Ukrainian Cossacks leaded by Cossack Hetman Petro Sahaydachnyi defeated an army of 400 thousand Turkish warriors saving Europe from Turkish invasion.

There are many events and festivals held annually in the Khotyn Fortress, in these festivals visitors have the chance to dress historical costumes and learn historical details of the medieval epoch, they have also the opportunity to taste medieval dishes and listen to musicians playing medieval songs.
