Ukraine History

Ukraine Independence

On July 16, 1990 the supreme Raja of Ukraine proclaimed Ukraine's self-government. On August 24, 1991 the supreme Raja proclaimed the act of independence of Ukraine, in which the parliament declared Ukraine as an independent democratic state.

On December 1, in a nationwide referendum, more than 90% of the population voted for the independence from the Soviet Union.

Leonid Kravchuk was elected the second President of Ukraine; the period between 1991 and 2004 was marked by the governments of Leonid Kravchuk and his successor Leonid Kuchma.

In 2004, Leonid Kuchma announced that he would not run for re-election. The presidential election pitted Viktor Yushchenko, the former prime minister against Viktor Yanukovich, the current prime minister.

A political crisis erupted after the opposition started enormous street protests against the results of the presidential election, widely considered to have been fraudulent. Following the Orange Revolution, on December 26, 2004, after two rounds of fallacious elections, Viktor Yushchenko became leader of Ukraine.
