Getting Around Kharkiv

Getting around Kharkiv Kharkiv contains many different pubic transportation facilities including Buses, Kharkiv Metro, trolleybuses, tramways, taxis, and marshrutki.

The Kharkiv Metro, which was opened in 1975, is the city’s rapid transit system, it includes three different metro lines (Kholodnohirsko-Zavodska, Saltivska and Oleksiivska), with 28 stations in total and about 35 km of tracks. The third line was opened in May, 1995. The Metro is the fastest and easiest way of travelling in the city. Every day it carries nearly 1 million people. To enter the metro you need to buy a token from the cash desk, one token is valid for one journey, no matter the length; the fare does not depend on the travelling distance.

Buses, trolleybuses, tramways, taxis, and marshrutki are sometimes more convenient than the Kharkiv Metro, for example, if you want to see the attractions of the city or if you want to travel a short distance.

Kharkiv Metro opens at 5:30 am and closes down at midnight; other transportation means starts working at 5:00 am, and runs until midnight in most districts.

To use the tram and trolleybus is opportune to buy a ticket right inside from the ticket-collector; there also exist month tickets. Keep your ticket until the end of your trip.

Buses are very popular these carry about 12 million passengers yearly. On a bus or a van, the fare is paid at the entrance to the driver or ticket collector.

There are several 24-hour taxi companies in Kharkiv, the price of the service should be agreed in advance, payments are only in cash.
