Dnipropetrovsk, also spelled Dnepropetrovsk, Dniepropetrovsk, or Dnipropetrovs'k, is a city situated along the Dnepr River near its confluence with the Samara in Eastern Ukraine. The city is, among many other things, the capital of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast (province), and the Ukraine’s third largest city by population, its distance to Kyiv is 479 km.

Dnipropetrovsk or simply Dnepr, as it is usually named by locals, is located in an area rich in mineral resources, because of it is also a major industrial centre being their major industries the machine-building, high-technology, chemical, and steel manufacturing. Dnipropetrovsk is home to Yuzhmash, the major space and ballistic missile designer in Ukraine. Due to its role as a main arms producer in Soviet times, no foreigners were allowed to visit the city without and official permission until the 1990s when Ukraine declared its independence.

Additionally, Dnipropetrovsk is one of the richest farm lands in Ukraine thanks to its extensive black soil lands and climate. The climate in Dnipropetrovsk is moderately continental which contributes to the development of agriculture. Average temperature in winter ranges from -5 to -7 ºC, in summer ranges from +22 to +23 ºC.

Dnipropetrovsk is home of a State University and research and teaching institutes.

The city was founded in 1783 by the Russian Prince Grigory Potyomkin, the city was originally named Yekaterinoslav (Ekaterinoslav) in honour of Catherine the Great, Empress of the Russian Empire. The present name was adopted in 1926.

Dnipropetrovsk remained as a small town until its industrialization in the 1880s, when the city became a big railway junction with railways travelling to Odesa, the Donets Basin, and Moscow; soon Dnipropetrovsk became one of the largest industrial cities of Ukraine.

Dnipropetrovsk is a city of green parks, long boulevards, recreation areas, modern architecture, and picturesque Dnepr embankments. The main tourist attractions of the city include the majestic Preobrazhensky Cathedral (built in 1786) and the largest city’s street named after Karl Marx, other highlights include the Rocket Museum, the History Museum, the Diorama, the Taras Shevchenko Park, the St Nicholas Church located in the Monastyrsky Island, and the Musical Fountain. The Dnepr River helps to enhance the beauty of the town and region. Cultural amenities include several theatres and philharmonic hall.

Dnipropetrovsk has a well developed public transportation system, so getting around seeing the sights of the city is quite easy. One of the main transportation ways of Dnipropetrovsk is its Metro which consists of one metre line with a total of six stations.

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast has marvellous flora and fauna, there are more than 1700 varieties of vegetation, and 7500 varieties of animals; there are 114 nature parks occupying a total area of approximately 26 thousand hectares.
