 Kievan RusThe area rapidly prospered as the center of the powerful state of Kyivan Rus. Prince Vladimir the Great (Volodymyr) adopted Byzantine Christianity and converted the Kievan aristocracy and most of the people to Christianity in 988. During the 10th and 11th centuries, Kyiv (Kiev) was the most important political and cultural centre in Eastern Europe. The reigns of Vladimir the Great and his son Yaroslav I the Wise constitute the Golden Age of Kiev. Yaroslav I promulgated the Russkaya Pravda, the first East Slavic written legal code. After the death of the Prince Vladimir Monomakh, Kyivan Rus became involved in a extended period of feudal wars. In 1240, the Mongols headed by Batu Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan captured Kiev, ending Kievan power. Ukraine History
