Kyiv History



Kyiv is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe; it has been on the shores of the Dnepr River for more than 1500 years. Kyiv was the capital of the first Ukrainian State known today as Kievan Rus which predated modern Ukraine, Belarus and Russia; this is why Kyiv is often referred to as “the mother of all cities”.

In 1240, Kievan Rus was overrun by the Mongol invaders; later Kyiv became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In 1654, Kyiv was liberated by the Cossack Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky in an attempt of create an independent Ukrainian state, although Kyiv become a protectorate of Russia.

In 1775, Kyiv was completely annexed by the Russian Empire, during two centuries; Kyiv experienced growing Russification and Russian immigration, the city prospered in the late 19th century. From 1921 onwards Kyiv was an important part of the Ukrainian SSR. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Kyiv became the capital of the Independent country of Ukraine.
